Information and Technology Services (iTECS) is where we provide essential ICT (information and communications technology) and information services across Scottish Government to a growing number of shared services customers. In this key management and operational role, you will help ensure our technology infrastructure meets the needs of thousands of users across central government.

As a Lead Infrastructure Engineer for Data Centres and SCOTS Network Services, you will oversee the provision of these critical services, ensuring they are reliable, secure, and fit for purpose. You will also contribute to shaping the strategic direction of iTECS, helping to deliver high-quality ICT solutions and expert advice that support the organisation’s wider digital ambitions.

Responsibilities
• Lead teams and departments in the design, implementation, administration and support of infrastructure solutions and services with an understanding of information security.
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of the most appropriate modern standards and practices, and how they are applied.
• Achieve excellent user outcomes.
• Initiate and monitor actions to investigate patterns and trends to resolve problems.
• Select appropriate design standards, methods and tools, and ensure they are applied effectively.
• Review the systems designs of others to ensure the selection of appropriate technology, efficient use of resources and integration of multiple systems and technology.
• Manage resources to ensure that the systems integration function works effectively.
• Anticipate and advise on future technology changes that present opportunities for the product or programme.
• Identify process improvements and contribute to the definition of best practice.
• Troubleshoot and identify problems across different technology capabilities including computing, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, commercial-off-the-shelf software (COTS) and open-source software.
• Coordinate the identification and assessment of new and emerging hardware, software and communication technologies, products, methods and techniques. Evaluate likely relevance of these for the organisation.
• Provide regular briefings to staff and management.

Experience

Lead Criteria 1: Proven knowledge and significant senior professional experience across infrastructure and network management extending across multiple and varied architecture environments.

Lead Criteria 2: Evidence of delivering continual service improvement; willing to challenge established practices, using evidence to deliver a better service to the business as a whole. This will include a vision for streamlining processes and reducing costs to ensure focus on delivering support for new business critical technologies.

Proven experience of developing, supporting, coaching, and leading others to achieve the organisation’s strategic objectives.

Experience of IT Service Management, Risk Management, Programme Management and Project Management methodologies to plan and develop and protect future facing solutions to address the shifting strategic priorities of the business. A vision of products and services lifecycles and a passion for innovation.

Extensive knowledge of Standards associated with IT practice nationally and internationally and how they should be applied, and experience of accreditation or compliance.

Excellent oral and written communications skills with a proficiency in conveying with both technical and non-technical audiences at all levels; including excellent analytical skills to be able to quickly scrutinise issues and draw conclusions and interpretations from the information available to plan and deliver strategic solutions for the wider business.

An initial sift will be conducted using the CV and supporting statement on Lead Experience 1 & 2 as listed above.

Candidates who pass the initial sift will have their applications fully assessed against the other Experience criteria and Behaviours.

Stage two (interview and DDaT technical assessment): If successful at application sift, you will be invited to an assessment and interview where we will test all criteria outlined in the Success Profile above.

The sift is scheduled for w/c 24th March.

Assessments are scheduled for w/c 7th April however this may be subject to change.

DDaT Pay Supplement

This post is part of the Scottish Government Digital, Data and Technology (DDAT) profession, as a member of the profession you will join the professional development system. This post currently attracts a £5,000.00 annual DDAT pay supplement, applicable after a 3-month competency qualifying period. The payment will be backdated to your start date in the role. Pay supplements are reviewed regularly and there is one currently underway. Changes will be communicated when the review is concluded.

Working Pattern

Our standard hours are 35 hours per week, we offer a truly flexible working including full-time, part-time, flexitime, and compressed hours meaning you could work your full hours while working less than 5 days per week.

We embrace a hybrid working style meeting in person when it is useful to do so where all colleagues will spend time in Saughton House, Edinburgh.
