Data Scientist

You will apply the principles of Machine Learning (ML), Data Engineering, Data Analysis and Interactive Visualisations to develop and integrate our new Digital Capabilities into the rest of the business to help drive high level business decisions. The focus is on delivering useful insights, developing transformative capabilities and then effectively communicating with the rest of the business. This includes recording your achievements by contributing and maintaining our modern documentation system.

During the placement you will be expected to contribute to new and existing projects allow you to develop your skills in data science and app development with the assistance of the team. It is expected that you will participate in independent self-learning both in and outside of work through, podcasts, blogs, books and online training. Our approach is to give you the opportunity to start delivering small scale but standalone projects right from the start so that you can apply your new skills.

We are looking for problem solvers, who are good communicators, self-motivated and are familiar with modern computing (hardware & software) and therefore placement students from a variety of backgrounds including Engineering, Computing, Physics, Finance and Maths are encouraged to apply.

We use a variety of tools and languages so familiarity with git, Markdown, Python, pandas, command-line utilities (curl, grep, etc), terminals and container technology are advantageous but not required. The emphasis is on continuous growth and having the ability to visualise a mental data model i.e. how should I structure the data to answer this question?
Key Responsibilities
• Derive useful insights from our data and communicate effectively to the rest of the business.
• Support the development of useful capabilities / building blocks to support our Digital activities and document them.
• Collect, process and analyse data from various Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
• Construct a real-time train tracking dashboard for displaying and showcasing our work within the business.
Competencies
• Familiarity with basic data structures such as Spreadsheets, knowledge of more advanced data structures like DataFrames desirable but not required.
• Knowledge of at least one programming language (Python / R desirable but not required).
• Passion, enthusiasm and a can-do attitude.
• Self-motivated, driven and organised.
• Willingness to develop own skills.
